After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from April 16, 2024

AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its second regular meeting in April:

Approved a construction contract for athletic fields at Lake Wilmore. The City Council approved a $9.4 million contract for the Lake Wilmore Park Athletic Fields Project, which includes the construction of four multi-purpose fields sized and designed to accommodate youth football, flag football and lacrosse games as well as the construction of six new covered pickleball courts adjacent to the recreation center, currently under construction. Once complete, Lake Wilmore Park will have a total of 18 covered pickleball courts. Along with the fields, the project scope includes field lighting, a restroom and storage building, parking and space dedicated for food trucks or mobile concessions. The resurfacing and striping of Grove Hill Road is also included.

Amended the FY23 Streets Resurfacing Project. The council approved an amendment in the amount of $1.5 million to the Fiscal Year 2023 Streets Resurfacing Project. This brings the total project amount to $4.25 million due to additional work that was needed, including a full-depth reclamation of Owens Road and the resurfacing of additional streets. Authorized a design services agreement for the North Donahue Drive Widening Project. The council authorized an agreement in the amount of $271,000 for engineering design services for the North Donahue Drive Widening Project, which will include the portion of Donahue Drive from Shug Jordan Parkway to near Miracle Road. At this time there is no estimated construction timeline for this project.

The council also:

  • Reappointed Kathy Powell to the Board of Education to serve a second term starting June 1 and ending on May 31, 2029.
  • Approved a restaurant retail liquor license for Boulangerie French Bakery, located at 138 North College Street
  • Approved an agreement with Musco Sports Lighting for purchasing light fixtures for the Lake Wilmore Park Athletic Fields Project at the cost of $625,000.
